Advertising has not only become a part of our everyday life, but has almost become a form of life in itself. Advertising, when executed properly, can guide and shape almost every thought process and emotion that originates and filters through our mind and body. Where should I eat, what should I wear, what do I drive to get there, what services do I use to get what I need done?
Without advertising, many of these questions would be answered by plain old association, luck or even worse, wouldn't get answered at all. An awesome responsibility lies within the power of advertising and those that execute it. Because of this almost civic responsibility, it is necessary to regulate those that craft, shape and send messages that are seen by millions people on a daily basis.
The First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects advertising as a form of commercial speech that can only be regulated if, and only if it meets the following criteria:
- The advertising is misleading or concerns an illegal product, or
- If there is a substantial government interest, and the regulation directly advances that government interest, and if the regulation is narrowly tailored to that interest.
Ad 2 Phoenix educates its membership about local, state and federal public policy issues impacting the communications industry.
With that being said, Ad 2 Phoenix works to promote the efforts and achievements of the industry to legislative officials on all levels. Through creating a bond and understanding between the advertisers of tomorrow and the government leaders of today, we can work to raise the level of our work, without breaking the laws of our land.
